The AGN fraction – velocity dispersion relation in clusters of galaxies

چکیده

Context. Some previous investigations have found that the fraction (fAGN ) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is lower in clusters than in the field. This can result from the suppression of galaxy-galaxy mergers in high-velocity dispersion (σv) clusters, if the formation and/or fueling of AGNs is directly related to the merging process. Aims. We investigate the existence of a relation between fAGN and σv in galaxy clusters in order to shed light on the formation and evolution processes of AGNs and cluster galaxies. Methods. Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey we determine fAGN and σv for the clusters in two samples, extracted from the catalogs of Popesso et al. (2006a) and Miller et al. (2005), and excluding clusters with significant evidence for substructures. Results. We find a significant fAGN − σv anti-correlation. Clusters with σv lower and, respectively, higher than 500 km s have AGN fractions of 0.21±0.01 and 0.15±0.01, on average. The fAGN −σv relation can be described by a model that assumes fAGN is proportional to the galaxies merging rate, plus a constant. Conclusions. Since fAGN increases with decreasing σv, AGNs are likely to have played a significant rôle in heating the intra-cluster medium and driving galaxy evolution in cluster precursors and groups.

Wide - Field Chandra X - Ray Observations of Agn in Abell 85 & Abell 754

To better understand the mechanism or mechanisms that lead to AGN activity today, we measure the X-ray AGN fraction in a new sample of nearby clusters and examine how it varies with galaxy properties, projected cluster-centric radius, and cluster velocity dispersion. We present new wide-field Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of Abell 85, Abell 754 and the background cluster Abell 89B out ...

The Distribution of Agn in Clusters of Galaxies

We present a study of the distribution of AGN in clusters of galaxies with a uniformly-selected, spectroscopically-complete sample of 35 AGN in eight clusters of galaxies at z = 0.06→ 0.31. We find that the 12 AGN with LX > 1042 erg s−1 in cluster members more luminous than a rest-frame MR < −20 mag are more centrally concentrated than typical cluster galaxies of this luminosity, although these...

On the prevalence of radio–loud AGN in brightest cluster galaxies: implications for AGN heating of cooling flows

The prevalence of radio-loud AGN activity in present-day massive halos is determined using a sample of 625 nearby groups and clusters selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Brightest group and cluster galaxies (BCGs) are more likely to host a radio– loud AGN than other galaxies of the same stellar mass (by below a factor of two at a stellar mass of ∼ 5 × 1011M⊙, but rising to over an order...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
